    Year 5 Home Learning

    Dear Parents/Carers,

Bonjour, Salut! to all of our fabulous Year 5’s and their families! It feels really nice to type this letter to you all, because we want to say, ‘hi’ and update you on a few things. First things first, thank you to so many of you for making contact using the class email addresses and for sharing your children’s home learning efforts. It is encouraging to hear that so many children have been working so diligently on the tasks, while at the same time undertaking creative challenges including origami, music, Lego, creative writing and art. Well done for completing the challenges sent via TT Rockstars and a massive congratulations to Eagles for beating Hawks in our inter-class competition! All of the children’s efforts have made us very proud as well as being genuine highlights of our day. Keep an eye out for more competitions to come!

We have started to set some ‘2Dos’ on Purple Mash which the children will be able to access when they login (login details have been stuck inside each child’s planner). One of the tasks is a chapter book called  ‘ A Horde of Ravens’ which allows the children to read a chapter before answering questions and completing associated writing tasks. By completing and submitting these, Mr Rastrick, Mrs Oliver and Mrs Soroko will be able to leave individual feedback for the children about their work as well as suggesting changes if children would like to edit and improve their work. In addition to this, the following link has weekly maths challenge questions appropriate to Year 5 and includes short, video tutorials together with the answers for each question: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/

One of the things that we are really missing is sharing our class texts with the children. Below is a list of books that we have read as a class this year as well as ones that we were planning to read in the Summer Term. If you have access to these texts, these would be fantastic to share with your children. We would also suggest looking at the free resources and links on the National Literacy Trust’s website: https://literacytrust.org.uk/family-zone/9-12/ and, as the children enjoyed ‘Stormbreaker’ by Anthony Horowitz so much, the www.alexrider.com or www.anthonyhorotwitz.com websites contain links to all of the author’s works together with some interactive activities. When your child has completed a book, encourage them to complete a book review which could include a summary of the plot and characters, their personal reactions and recommendations, together with an illustration of their favourite scene or character.

    - Cosmic Disco by Grace Nichols

    • - Ask an Astronaut by Tim Peake
    • - The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes
    • - Varmints by Helen Ward
    • - Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo
    • - Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz
    • - Theseus and the Minotaur by Daniel Morden
    • - The Legend of Odysseus by Hugh Lupton and Christina Balit

If we had been at school for the whole of the spring term, we would have been learning some new things in French – particularly about hobbies, food and animals, aswell as revising numbers, greetings, colours and weather. You can continue your French speaking and listening by using the ‘2Do’ set on Purple Mash. Additionally, we are also extremely disappointed that we will not be able to start our Ancient Greece topic so, if you are looking for something different to challenge yourself with, Purple Mash have a range of fantastic resources that could be used if you want to do some further home learning in this area.

If you need any support with home learning, Mr Rastrick (Eagles) and Mrs Oliver & Mrs Soroko (Hawks) will be happy to help and we will aim to reply within 24 hours if you send a message to the class email address (eagles@lakeviewschool.co.uk or hawks@lakeviewschool.co.uk).

We are missing you all a great deal and hope that you are keeping safe. Please keep in touch,

    The Year 5 team

Mrs Soroko, Mrs Oliver, Mr Rastrick, Mrs Tilley, Mrs Smith, Miss Whitlock, Mrs Brooks
